Why FlipWhizz exists
I've spent over 30 years working with children — in secondary schools in the UK, in early years and childcare settings, in ESL classrooms, and in outdoor and experiential education. Across all of that, one thing has always been true: children light up when they feel seen.
A story that mentions something a child actually cares about — their favourite animal, a fear they're working through, the game they play at break time — lands completely differently from a generic one. It's not just more engaging. It tells the child: someone made this for me. Someone knows me.
That's the idea behind FlipWhizz. Not just a book with a child's name swapped in, but a story that's built entirely around who they are right now — what they love, what makes them laugh, what they dream about, what they're navigating.
How it's different
Most personalised children's books start with a template. You type in a name and pick a hair colour, and the name gets dropped into a pre-written story. The plot is the same for every child. The only thing that changes is the cover.
FlipWhizz doesn't work that way. There are no templates. You describe your child — what they're into, how old they are, what kind of story you want — and the AI builds a completely original story from scratch. The characters, the plot, the tone, the illustrations — everything is shaped around that one child.
A personalised storybook for a 4-year-old who loves diggers and is nervous about starting nursery will be completely different from one made for a 7-year-old who plays football and dreams about space. That's the point.
Built by hand, not by a team
I'm Katy, and I built FlipWhizz myself. I'm a self-taught developer. I designed the platform, wrote the code, built the AI pipeline, set up the print fulfilment, and made every decision about how it should work based on what I've learned from years of watching children respond to stories.
FlipWhizz isn't backed by a venture fund or built by a product team. It's one person building a tool she genuinely believes should exist — because the children's books that matter most are the ones that feel like they were made for exactly one child.
The bigger picture
Right now, FlipWhizz creates personalised storybooks. But the longer-term vision is bigger: an AI companion that learns about a child over time through conversations with parents, and helps create stories, activities, and experiences that grow alongside the child.
The storybooks are the beginning. The goal is to build something that helps families connect with their children in ways that are meaningful, personal, and grounded in how children actually develop.
